The Damiani’s History…
This story started back in 1934 when the ‘Avvocato’, Carlo Damiani bought a tract of farmland on the outskirts of Pozzuoli. The land is set in a magnificent location: behind lake Avernus, the famous entrance to Hades, in the words of Virgil and Dante, and at the foot of Monte Nuovo, the youngest volcano in Europe (1538).
The farmland, with its large citrus grove sparked the idea of creating a vast farming business. When WWII ended the whole family decided to move again back to Naples in Via Crispi.
The four enterprising sons of the ‘Avvocato’: Eduardo, Memo, Enzo and Lucio, all full of energy and ideas, started organising parties and dances in the lower level of their villa.
The success was immediate, the space hardly sufficient, and the initial youthful adventure took them back again to the farmhouse.
This became a business as the brothers started developing activities in the pleasant setting of the farm, utilising all their creative talents, each one with his own personality, but coming together to work in great synergy.
The brothers’ unending enthusiasm and the ‘joie de vivre’ so typical of the 50’s and 60’s in Italy (La dolce vita) were the main ‘Mediterranean’ ingredients in the quick transformation of the rural farmhouse into a rustic styled but refined and elegant resort.Born out of a playful pastime, the resort grew constantly, with the addition of new activities and entertainments each year.
Over time, and with the help of loyal friends, the dance floor was built and extended, a restaurant and pizzeria were added, and the first go-kart circuit in southern Italy was created.
After an unexpected find; healing thermal waters flowing from an underground source below the volcano, a pool was designed, then another (a third and a fourth will be added later to create an ideal SPA complex such as the ancients Romans used to enjoy!!).
In the years that followed, further expansion included: a modern gym, four red clay tennis courts, basket and volleyball court, spacious camping grounds as well as bungalows and mini-apartments set amidst the cool air of shady Mediterranean umbrella pines and the scent of citrus trees!
The Averno Tourist Resort is today a renowned establishment, a welcoming green oasis where one can still find the sons of the ‘Avvocato’, but the characteristics remain the same: a sunny, friendly, and yet exclusive place as well.
